Welcome to the world of Hot Spots (known technically as Acute Moist Dermatitis). Hot spots happen fast—often developing from a small insect bite, allergy flare-up, or matted fur in just a few hours. Because dogs lick and bite the area incessantly, a minor itch turns into a raw, weeping bacterial infection at lightning speed.
When a hot spot breaks out, speed is your best friend. Here is a veterinarian-approved 5-step emergency care plan to soothe the pain, stop the itching, and dry up the sore fast.
Hot spots thrive in warm, moist, dark environments trapped under thick fur. The absolute first thing you must do is get the hair out of the way.
Gently clip the hair: Use a pair of blunt-nosed electric clippers or small grooming scissors to trim the fur around the edges of the sore.
Expose clear skin: Trim at least 1 inch of healthy skin all the way around the red area.
Why this matters: Exposing the wet sore to fresh air is the single fastest way to start drying out the infection and preventing it from spreading outward.
Caution: Be extremely gentle! Hot spots are raw and very painful. Have a helper hold your dog or offer a lick-mat with peanut butter while you carefully trim.
Once the fur is cleared away, you need to remove sticky pus, dried crust, and surface bacteria without irritating the skin further.
What to Use: A mild, veterinary-grade antimicrobial wash, chlorhexidine spray, or sterile saline solution.

How to Clean: Saturate a clean gauze pad or cotton ball with the cleanser. Gently dab (do not scrub!) the wet center and working outward toward the edges until all dirt and crust are gone. Pat dry with a fresh paper towel.

This is the non-negotiable step. The golden rule of hot spot care is breaking the itch-scratch cycle.

Put on a plastic cone (E-collar), inflatable doughnut collar, or a breathable surgical suit that completely covers the area.
Leave the collar on 24/7 until the sore is fully dry, scabbed over, and no longer red.
