Dogs have two small fluid sacs located inside their anus (at roughly the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions). These glands produce a strong-smelling fluid every time your dog has a firm bowel movement.
What Happens: If your dog's stool is consistently soft or they have narrow anal ducts, these glands fail to empty naturally. They become full, swollen, itchy, or impacted.
Key Signs: Scooting on carpet, sudden fishy or metallic odor, chewing at the base of the tail, or sitting down abruptly mid-walk.
The Fix: Have a vet or professional groomer manually express the glands. Increasing daily dietary fiber (like canned pumpkin or psyllium husk) helps create bulkier stools that express the glands naturally.
Just like humans get itchy eyes or a runny nose, dogs manifest allergies through their skin—especially around their paws, ears, and rear end.
What Happens: Food allergies (often to proteins like chicken or beef) or environmental allergens (pollen, dust mites, grass) cause systemic skin inflammation. The thin, sensitive skin around the anus becomes red, dry, and intensely itchy.
Key Signs: Licking paws, chronic ear infections, red belly skin, and scooting without any fishy odor from anal glands.
